Comments from Dr. Schmitt about his approach to helping others:

I feel privileged when I am invited into your life to share in your pain and suffering in order to try to help you understand, heal and grow from the emotional wounds and trauma you have experienced. I believe our relationship is one between two equal individuals who will work hard to help heal and understand your wounds. We will be travelers on the journey of healing together and both be changed by our time together. A good therapy experience offers opportunities to learn important things about yourself, to acquire helpful life skills, and to integrate both the past and present to achieve a much better quality of life.  As an individual, I believe you have the ability to understand and implement the changes you desire; only you are ultimately responsible for deciding the direction or course your life may take.

My approach focuses on helping you understand your feelings, emotions, and motivations; those you are aware of and those you are not. Through a sequence of self-explorations, which may include an investigation of your family history, I will assist you in learning more about yourself and the external and internal factors that affect the quality of your life and relationships. It is my desire to help you improve your skills in the areas of communication, self-control, and self-understanding. You are in full control of what you want to accomplish in therapy, and your individual spiritual beliefs will be respected.

I look forward to the opportunity to help you grow and achieve your fullest potential as a human being.
